Book description

By adopting a multi-disciplinary approach, this book provides a comprehensive analysis of the legality of the use of autonomous weapons systems under international law. It examines different arguments presented by States, roboticists and scholars to demonstrate the challenges such systems will create for the laws of war. This study examines how technology of warfare seeks to increase the dissociation of risk and communication between weapons and their human operators. Furthermore, it explains how algorithms might give rise to 'errors' on the battlefield that cannot be directly attributed to human operators. Against this backdrop, Dr Seixas-Nunes examines three distinct legal frameworks: the distinction between the legality of weapons and the laws of targeting; different mechanisms of individual accountability and the importance of recovering the category of 'dolus eventualis' for programmers and technicians and, finally, State responsibility for violations of the laws of war caused by weapons' software errors.

Select The Legality and Accountability of Autonomous Weapon Systems

The Legality and Accountability of Autonomous Weapon Systems
pp i-ii
Get access
Export citation

Select The Legality and Accountability of Autonomous Weapon Systems - Title page

The Legality and Accountability of Autonomous Weapon Systems - Title page
pp iii-iii
A Humanitarian Law Perspective
Get access
Export citation

Select Copyright page

Copyright page
pp iv-iv
Get access
Export citation

Select Dedication

Dedication
pp v-vi
Get access
Export citation

Select Contents

Contents
pp vii-vii
Get access
Export citation

Select Acknowledgements

Acknowledgements
pp viii-ix
Get access
Export citation

Select Abbreviations

Abbreviations
pp x-xii
Get access
Export citation

Select Introduction

Introduction
pp 1-8
Get access
Export citation

Select 1 - Introducing Autonomous Systems of War

1 - Introducing Autonomous Systems of War
pp 9-44
The Challenges of Artificial Intelligence
Get access
Export citation

Select 2 - AWS

2 - AWS
pp 45-102
The Current State of the AWS Debate and of State Policy
Get access
Export citation

Select 3 - Autonomous Weapon Systems and ‘Autonomy’

3 - Autonomous Weapon Systems and ‘Autonomy’
pp 103-139
Weapons or Killer Robots?
Get access
Export citation

Select 4 - AWS and the IHL Requirements

4 - AWS and the IHL Requirements
pp 140-190
Get access
Export citation

Select 5 - Accountability and Liability for the Deployment of Autonomous Weapon Systems

5 - Accountability and Liability for the Deployment of Autonomous Weapon Systems
pp 191-264
Get access
Export citation

Select Final Conclusion

Final Conclusion
pp 265-267
Get access
Export citation

Select Index

Index
pp 268-274
|
